Baldo Gelato, Lecce, Italy. By Caity Scott

Hidden along cobbled backstreets in the beautiful historic city of Lecce, Southern Italy, my family had the luck to come across Baldo Gelato. Already feeling stuffed from lunch, I insited that I was too full to be tempted by gelato. Yet, after walking into Baldo Gelato, I ended up happily eating some wonderful gelato five minutes later!

The vast array of choices lured my family and I in- ranging from frozen natural yoghurt, to a multitude of fruit sorbets, to a rich chocolate orange. My brother being allergic to milk, was absolutely delighted the variety of sorbet options that lay before him. Usually there's only lemon!

Both my dad and brother had strawberry sorbet, my mum milk chocolate, my sister her standard choice of vanilla, and I had chocolate orange! The sorbets were particularly creamy, rather than icy or watery as they can sometimes be. The chocolate orange was rich with candied orange chunks to surprise you at every taste.

Sadly, we were only visiting the city on a day trip so were unable to revisit this amazing gelateria, however I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Southern Puglia!

VIGÒ Ice Cream, Ljubljana, Slovenia, by Isabel Law

Right in the centre of of Ljubljana, this little corner shop had possibly the best ice cream I have ever had. Featuring fancy flavours such as mascarporne, nutella and hazelnut or dark chocolat, caramel and cacao nib this seemingly fancy shop came at extremely reasonable prices- €1.85 for a (very) sizable scoop. Every scoop also came with free dark or white chocolate dribbled on top to finish off. On top of this, the staff were lovely, and shop very clean. Definitely reccomendable!

Introduction, Version Francaise

Quand nous voyageons, nous goûtons et essayons beaucoup de nouvelles choses, parfois très aventureuses, comme des boules de riz gluants chinois confits de purée de pois rouge, mais le réconfort d'une bonne glace est toujours bien agréable!

Pour moi, la glace est le gout des vacances. En effet, se balader, glace en main, tout en explorant une nouvelle ville, ou un nouvel endroit quelconque, est une de mes activités favorites au monde. Peut importe le temps, une glace peut rafraîchir et rendre heureux!

Le but de ce blog est d'aider et accélérer la diffusion des adresses de petits magasins, souvent privés, souvent italiens, de gelato délicieux dans tous les petits coins du monde. Cette idée nous est parvenu (à ma famille et moi) il y a deux ans, lorsque nous étions dans la ville charmante de Tulum, au Méxique, où nous avons découvert le magasin Pana e Chocolate. Nous sommes une famille "très glace": chaque fois que nous voyageons, nous essayons de trouver un bon glacier où nous devenons de clients fidèles pendant le temps de notre séjour. 

Voyageant beaucoup, et ayant des amis très internationaux qui peuvent m'aider, j'aimerais peu à peu crée un répertoire de petits glaciers du monde. Si vous avez des suggestions, n'hésitez pas à m'envoyer un email sur capucinecogne@gmail.com, ceci ne peut pas marcher sans vous!

Et comme ça, où que l'on soit, nous pourrons avoir une glace là-bas!

 

UCoffee, Sanlitun, Beijing

I have had the most amazing time in Beijing. On a course sponsored by the Confucius Institute in Tsinghua University, I have met many wonderful people, that I honestly believe I will keep in touch with for a long time. Many things built the bonds between everyone on the trip: from spending 5 hours in a coach, to climbing the Great Wall after 2 hours sleep, to learning Chinese. But I think one of the biggest activities that made everyone closer was going out in Sanlitun. Traditionally starting with V Plus Lounge, and ending with Sirteen Nightclub, every single night spent in this crazy part of the city was unforgettable!

And guess what? Not far away, within this lively neighbourhood, close to a street full of local street food (I highly recommend Mr Shi's dumplings), UCoffee does great gelato!!

A cute setting, imitating European cities, from London to Rome, and with peaceful painting classes in the evening, the place is lovely!! 

Their coffee was good, and Jason tried their Pistachio ice cream. Although not the expected taste one would have for pistachio gelato, being fairly creamy, it was really good. The other flavours also looked really delicious, especially Tiramisu and berries!!! 

If you are in Beijing on holiday or studying, you cannot miss out on a Sanlitun night! And of course, if you have a sudden craving for good gelato, drop by UCoffee!

Tired of bargaining but still want to shop some more? This is the perfect break!!!

Lovely lovely people that give you many free sweets if you ask, their lemon and hazelnut flavour was particularly delicious!! 

After having bought bags, shoes, t-shirts, make-up, or any other thing you would like at this wonderful market, a gelato can easily be needed! And my advice is don't opt for Dairy Queen, the things you know, but instead try some gelato from this cute little stand. You can eat it whilst browsing before you go for the things you want (always a good idea), and it honestly feels so good, especially in Beijing's summer heat!

                      

Don't forget to ask to taste, because in this place once you ask for one, they make you try everything!! 

Pearl (or Hong Qiao in Chinese) market is the best fake market in Beijing, cheaper than the silk market and more open to bargaining than the others too. I would really recommend it, and of course, recommend the little ice cream stop during your time there!! 

Stopping at this shop is also a great opportunity to taste typical Chinese sweets, such as baitu!

Hongqiao/Pearl market is just in front of the Temple of Heaven, a beautiful site that I would also recommend!!

Havelock Place Bungalow, Colombo, Sri Lanka

                         

A hidden little hotel off a main road in Sri Lanka, The --- is full of vegetation, clean, and generally lovely. Stopping there between each of our trips, my family and I got to know the personnel, who are also very kind. 

Although we did not have the opportunity to try much of the restaurant's (very yummy-looking and quite inventive) menu, we did taste their gelato!!! 

The ---- has many quirky, homemade flavours, making the gelato experience quite exciting! 

I personally loved coconut & almond, which had a crunchy and creamy feel to it. My brother tasted dark chocolate, which he also enjoyed (judging by the speed he devoured it in). Some flavours were not available but seemed delicious, so if you happen to go taste one, let me know how it was please!

Sitting at a peaceful table surrounded by vegetation and the sound of trickling water from the small swimming pool, I highly recommend this restaurant (and the hotel itself) as a break from bustling Colombo. And of course, if you do go, don't miss out on their wonderful gelato!

The Pedlar's Inn, Galle Fort, Galle, Sri Lanka

I'm The beautiful historical area that is Galle Fort, has lots for tourists to by and is filled with restaurants and cafes. However, The Pedlar's Inn, recommended by my Sri Lankan friend, soon became our favourite. 

With one normal cafe and one shop dedicated to their delicious homemade ice cream, the flavours at the Pedlar's Inn alternate depending on the season and products quality. 

After a day at the beach, at the swimming pool, or even in the rain (as you can see by the photos), The Pedlar's Inn gelato was perfect. However, if you plan on going, be careful as the ice cream runs out fairly quickly (a clear sign of how delicious it is). 

We became friends with Ifqah (very unsure how to spell it), the person that sells and makes the ice cream. Passionate about his ice creams, he bid us to taste all kinds of ice creams throughout the three days. 

Having tasted I think every single ice cream between the four of us, my family particularly enjoyed passion fruit, mango, chocolate and hazelnut.

I would really recommend getting one of these wonderful ice creams and meandering around charming Galle Fort, especially going towards the less touristy parts or walking along the fort to go see the light house. 

We ended our two week Sri Lankan journey in Galle, and the salty breeze, beautiful place, and delicious gelato, truly was a perfect conclusion. 

Dri Dri, Dubai.

In the sweltering heat of Dubai there is no better taste than a cool gelato. 

Dri Dri, an Italian branch of gelato shops that has a shop in Brazil, Bahrain, London, and is opening a fifth in Dubai, was splendid. 

In my opinion, the best gelato shops are those in which the ice cream and sorbet flavours available switch, depending on the quality of the products that season/ month/ day. This then clearly demonstrates that a shop pays attention to what products they are using. Dri Dri, of course, is one of those shops that alternate. 

Staying in Dubai for three days, on a layover to Sri Lanka, we were able to (between the four of us) taste most of the flavours!! After visiting the 'Old Dubai', walking in the gold market, seeing the Burj Khalifa, or any trip really, it was always lovely to pass by Dri Dri on the way back to the hotel. 

We were always warmly welcomed, and got to know Diana, who has been working for Dri Dri Dubai since it opened, five years ago. Originally Phillipino, she was formed in making the gelato and the ice cream cones (which are absolutely delicious) when beginning the job. 

If you can deal with the heat, I would recommend getting an ice cream and walking along the jemeira beach. However, beware if you go, as we did, in the midst of summer, you'll have to eat your gelato very rapidly before it melts!

My favourite flavour was raspberry, which was truly delicious, although I was unable to taste the house speciality, pistachio. I found the lime and green apple sorbets a bit too sugary, but good nonetheless. My brother (who is less of a sorbet boy) loved the cookies and cream!

                                              

My only criticism of this charming shop is that you cannot get one scoop in a cone, as they charge you the same as two scoops. 

Regardless, I highly highly recommend these gelato shops as they have tasty flavours, yummy ice cream, and lovely ice-cream makers and servers!

After taking the dogs on a long walk next to the coast line of Wales, we were all feeling peckish and stopped off next to a small beach with a small selection of shops. Despite the rain, the ice cream looked amazing so we all decided to get some.

I had the caramel biscuit ice cream (that tastes just like biscuit spread) which was super good! My dad had salted caramel and my mum had peanut butter and they both ate them very quickly and wouldn't let me try them so I'm assuming they were equally delicious 😊 I would really recommend this wonderful ice cream shop!!

In the gorgeous town of Arequipa in Peru, just outside of the historical centre, I had a delicious almond gelato in the rustic restaurant, Típika.

The desert was perfect in the heat, and if you have a sweet palate like me, I would really recommend the almond flavour!! The meal was very yummy as well.

When waiting for a bus to take to the split rock waterfalls (worth a visit!), we decided to take a stroll around the old town of Split. As it was midday, the temperature had soared to 33 degrees, so we all desperately needed something cold! Fortunately, Pumparela was situated directly opposite the Cathedral of Saint Dominus, enabling us to eat ice cream whilst site seeing. A family business, the shop was welcoming and everything (12 flavours) looked delicious!

To cool down, I got a citrus sorbet, and although sour, it was incredibly refreshing. Meanwhile, Ed and Rosie got chocolate chip and berry flavours, which they loved.

Délicieux bâtonnets de glace super raffraichissants dans Budapest! Juste a cote de Millenáris Park, chose parfaite pour se balader dans Budapest l'été, ou comme dessert après le dîner. Nous avons adoré le gout KIWI :)
